Type Locality and Naming

By the Karatut ridge, near the village of Burchmulla, Koksuy Ridge I.M. Nigmadzhanov, 1988 (327, pp. 3-6). Stratotype in the middle reaches of the Kulosya River, on its left bank.

Synonym: Karatut Suite, Каратутская св.


Lithology and Thickness

Thinly layered, dark gray to black siliceous-clayey rocks of the type of clayey silicates, alternating with claystones, clayey-siliceous slates. In the lower part, individual layers of micritic limestones are encountered. In the upper part, individual layers (0.2-0.4 m) of carbonate turbidites appear, consisting of 90% of reworked crinoid detritus. Thickness 100-250m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformably on the Kuylyuk Fm or by different horizons of the lower part (sedimentary break) on the biogenic mounds of the Sargardon Fm

Upper contact

Overlain conformably by the Paltau-Carb Fm

Regional extent

Basin of the lower reaches of the Chatkal River (rivers Kulosya, Paltau, Yangikurgan, Akbulak, Karaarcha).

Fossils

Contains conodonts - Gnathodus texanus Raun., G. girtyi Hass., Lochriea commutata (B. et М.); foraminifera - Palaeotextularia sp., Propermodiscus aff. rotundus Tchern.


Age 

The full age range of the Karatut-Carb Fm is determined in the interval of the entire early Visean and the lower part of the late Visean. The upper age boundary shifts within the lower part of the late Visean.
